~Chapter Sixteen~

Xavier pulled into Lynn’s driveway at 2:10 am. They got out and rang the doorbell. Minutes later, the door swung open.

“Xavier, Deja, what are y’all doing here? It’s two o’ clock in the morning.”

“We came because we need some answers,” Deja said to Lynn.

“It couldn’t wait until morning?”

“No, it couldn’t,” Xavier said as he stepped into the house with Deja right behind him.

“You know I love you guys, but this shit better be good!” Lynn said with an attitude.

Xavier jumped right in. “It’s a long story so I’m going to make it short. I don’t know how true this is, Lynn, but I was told that Latasha is still alive.” Xavier really didn’t want to let it come out like that, because if indeed she was dead, he didn’t want to come off as insensitive to Lynn’s feelings.

Lynn looked at him as if she was going to be sick. “Who told you that?”

“I don’t think that’s important. I don’t want to re-open any old wounds if there are any, but I need to know the truth. Was it Latasha that they found?”

“Yes.”

“Did they show you any proof?”

“They had her ID”

“That’s it?” Deja asked.

“Yeah. They did DNA testing, but I didn’t get those results, her dad did.”

“You don’t have any proof then.”

"I can go down there Monday morning and order a death certificate.”

“You don’t have one?”

“No. I been meaning to go get one, but I haven’t gotten around to it yet.” she said with no emotion.

“Call me crazy, but I really don’t understand how you can be so calm about this,” Deja said. “I know y’all didn’t get along, but she is still your daughter.”

Lynn wasn’t too fond of Deja’s attitude, but she understood it. “Let me share something with y’all about my daughter. As y’all know, me and Latasha never had the mother daughter relationship, but let me explain why. When Latasha was around five is when it all started. One night I was working late, so her father was home with her. I made it home around nine o’ clock that night. When I got there, Latasha was supposed to be in bed. When I checked her room she wasn’t in there, but the sheets were pulled back like she was once there. I then went to my bedroom. We had a bathroom in there. When I walked in the room, I caught her looking in on her father. He was undressed in the mirror shaving. That was the first time. The second time, I caught her looking in on her cousin taking a piss. When she was around nine, she started messing with herself.” Xavier and Deja had a shocked look on their face, but were all ears.

Lynn continued. “That is how she put herself to sleep each night, which is how I knew that she had hormonal feelings down there. I took her to the doctor to see if they can help me figure out what was going on with her, but they would just tell me that it was normal, but I knew better than that.
