Hugo

Making sure to double-check the temperature on the oven, I stand back and stare at the vegetables boiling on the stove. Max suggested a nice home-cooked meal, having commented that Scarlet hasn’t eaten properly in weeks. I can cook as well as anyone. I’m no chef, but I can do the basics, and roasting a chicken isn’t that hard. We are having that talk with her when we are all assembled, and to say I’m nervous about how she is going to react to our ultimate plan for her, is a vast understatement. I think, or I’d like to think, that she will find the idea intriguing enough to hear us out.

I turn to the kitchen door when it opens and see Scarlet and Tristan amble in. They’re laughing about something; his hands are on her hips and she’s looking back at him over her shoulder.

“Hugo,” he says, his face lit up now that he’s near his woman. She is the only thing that can do that to him. He is a different person around her. Not that he’s hiding himself, he’s just lighter, freer. Maybe we all are.

“Hi!” Scarlet says and leaves him to come to me.

I wrap my arms around her and kiss her, enjoying her hands running lightly up my arms.

“You’re cooking!” she exclaims.

“Roast chicken dinner. You need fattening up.” I chuckle and squeeze her arse gently.

“Oh yum,” she says, but narrows her eyes. “Trying to tell me something?”

“Only that you haven’t eaten properly in a while, you need to take care of yourself. Or better yet, let us take care of you.”

“By cooking me a roast dinner? I’m not complaining.” She smiles and turns back to Tristan.

“Now that you’re in capable hands, I’ll leave you. I have some work that needs to be done today,” he says.

She nods, and he leaves us alone.

My heart beats a bit faster when she hoists herself up onto the counter and crosses her legs. Regarding me closely, she says, “About that fantasy, when do you want to do that?”

I feel my cheeks go hot. “Uhm…”

She giggles. “I’m game if you are now. Do you need to keep an eye on this, or do we have time to kill?”

“Time,” I mutter, reaching out to turn the veggies off. No way am I missing out on this opportunity.

However, I suddenly get overwhelmed and freeze before I drop my head into her lap, gripping her hips tightly. “I don’t deserve you.”

She runs her hands into my hair and kisses the top of my head. “Don’t say that. I love you.”

Her words. Those three words that have stopped the hearts of many men before me the world over, rush into my soul and I whimper.

“I love you, Scarlet,” I say, straightening up. “You are my beautiful princess, and I will worship you until the end of time.”

“Say more things like that,” she murmurs, cupping my face to kiss me.
