“So, let’s wrap up. Whatever happens, happens,” Vince said to Frank. “I’ve got the lady’s back. She’s not getting away from me.”

“Watch it, Romeo. She’s a handful.”

“She’s more than that, Frank.” Vince stood and looked out the window. “Oh, Christ. Frank, where the fuck are you?”

“Fire road, other side of the hill. Why?”

“Get your ass back here.” Vince hung up. “Fuck me,” he growled.

Seventeen

Vince came out into the living room, saw Rowan’s coffee cup out on the patio, and opened the sliding glass door. “Ro?” He looked down the side stairs and saw her out in front of the house between the driveway and the lake. She was on the phone.

“Mother-fuck...!” His phone beeped – the signal used only in emergencies. His blood ran cold. This was not good. Not fucking good. He signaled back in acknowledgment, but no voice confirmation came back. And that’s when he saw the boat pass Rowan on the water.
