Later, after everyone was asleep, I padded softly into the living room and picked up the phone. Everything I did was deliberate, and as I did it, I watched myself, astonished at my own audacity. I was cutting the past away, making a claim on the future me, or so I told myself.

The green backlit keypad added its glow to the light from the kitchen. I dialed carefully, my heart thumping in my chest, and waited. One ring, two, three.

On the fifth, someone picked up.

There was a sleepy, muffled “Hello…?” or something close to it, a shine of late-night belligerence buffing up the edges.

“Lily?” I said. “Is Lily there?”

The edge of belligerence sharpened. “Who is this?” It was a man’s voice.

“That you, Eddie?” I said.

I didn’t wait for confirmation. I launched into what I’d planned to say.

“Listen to me, Eddie. I’m going to marry your wife. I’m going to marry Lily. I love her and she loves me and she’s going to be mine. Do you understand?”

Rough breathing was followed by the sounds of someone moving amid a pile of bedclothes. The voice returned, awake and angry.

“Say that again?”

“Lily,” I said. “I love Lily. She’s going to be mine.”

“Who is this?”

“I love her,” I repeated. “I’m going to marry her.”

Before he could say another word, I returned the phone to the cradle. I sat there for a long while, feeling exultant and disturbed at the same time, not at all sure I had done the right thing. An hour passed and the room became crowded with dense, indignant shadows and a car sent its headlights spilling across the ceiling.
