“Oh my God, this cheesy bread is so delicious,” I told my mother as I sat across from her in the busy pizza parlor.

I loved pizza, but cheesy bread was my favorite addiction. If no one interfered, I would eat an entire box of twelve by myself.

“Kam, calm down. That bread isn’t going anywhere.”

“I know, but I’ve got to eat it while it’s hot,” I said fanning the steam that was rising from the gooey mozzarella.

“Yeah, well, you keep at it and you’re going to burn your damn tongue.”

“Relax, Mama, I’m fine.”

She shook her head. “So, how’s everything going? Is the new store ready to open?”

“Everything’s been good. I have no complaints.”

“Great,” she said while taking a sip from her straw.

“I just really hope people don’t think I’m doing too much by having this collaboration party with Cara Monique. Everyone already hates me. I don’t want to make it worse.”

“Who cares about what they think? Let them talk.”

“Of course you would say that.”

“That’s because that’s how I feel and so should you.”

“Well, personally, I do feel that way now. But you know how I am when it comes to my business.”

She nodded. “Yeah, I know. But everything’s going to be fine.”

“I hope so.” I forced myself to push back my worrisome thoughts. “Anyway, there’s something I want to get your opinion on.”

“Okay, what’s up?”

“So, you remember how I was telling you that I knew the guy that is leasing me the building?”

“Yeah, you said he was an old friend, right?”

“Yes,” I replied. “But I may have played down our friendship a little more than I should have.”

Leaning forward, she placed her elbows on the table and then looked at me with a side glare. “What exactly do you mean you played it down?”

“So, his name is Raheem, and I met him when I was working at the chiropractic clinic. We kind of...had a fling.”

My mother’s eyes widened. “Oh lord, Kam. Please tell me you weren’t one of the women that was in there screwing men for money.”

“No, no! Of course not. I never messed around with him while working. The clinic is just where we met.”

She placed her hand against her chest and let out a relieved sigh. “Thank God. You had me worried for a minute.”

“Trust me, you have nothing to worry about Mama. Everything I’ve ever said is true. But...I have been going back and forth in my mind about something lately.”

“Okay. What?”

I pulled another slice of cheesy bread from the pan. “Now that Malik and I are serious, I’m wondering if I should tell him about my past with Raheem.”

“Why? Do they know each other?”

“Not that I know of. But Raheem is in real estate, which means he’s probably acquainted with Deandra, and if he isn’t yet, eventually he will be. I don’t want to risk her finding out about our past and then running to tell Malik.” Fidgeting with my napkin, I lowered my gaze. “But I also don’t want to tell him and have him think the worst of me.
