Take a deep breath through your nose to the count of 6 Mississippi. The longer breath is to avoid you further worsening the situation by continuing to breathe at the same pace. If you feel like you can't regulate your pace of breathing, then proceed with the exercise at whatever pace your panic allows you till you feel you have regained at least some control.
Your panic may not allow you to hold your breath, so instead just exhale to the count of 6 Mississippi through your nose. Again, if you feel like you can't control it, then proceed at whatever pace you can till you regain some control.
