Brett hadnât had trouble sleeping since ...
He pushed his fingers through his hair. He couldnât even remember a time when he wasnât able to fall into bed, and instantly drift into a deep sleep.
Part of that came from being a busy CEO of a thriving television network.
After his wife died, heâd devoted even more time to his career. If he didnât have a client meeting, or a reason to stay at the office, he brought the office home. He spent almost as much time working at home as he did at the commercial property the company owned a few miles away.
But now, even looking past the double French doors at the stack of papers on his desk made him shudder.
When had he become a workaholic?
He knew Ava never would have allowed him to get by with his current working patterns. She was a stickler for life balance. If he even tried to stay at work past dinnertime, sheâd show up at the office and pack up his briefcase.
Jonathon knew it, and managed his calendar well. Heâd rarely had a meeting scheduled after five, and if he did, it was rare.
After she died, time didnât matter anymore.
Heâd leave early if his girls were around. Otherwise, what was the point?
He could see evidence of it everywhere as he walked through his home.
He hadnât spent time at home in a very long while. It was only recently that heâd thought much about it.
He glanced into the spare bedroom where there were currently tables piled high with Christmas ornaments and figurines, ready for when they recorded the show.
Jonathon had helped him clear out one closet. Heâd worked on another late one evening.
He had one more spot he wanted to tackle before they started shooting: Avaâs office. Sheâd used a spare bedroom and set it up to manage the household expenses. It had an elegant desk and chair, with matching shelves and bookcases that held her favorite books. There were boxes with trinkets, and a few pieces of art sheâd collected along the way. Photographs were everywhere, acknowledging their two decades together.
Now he stood in the doorway, peering inside.
This was the one room heâd dreaded tackling. So he had ignored it. And it had worked well for three years.
He knew his daughters had pulled things out and brought items home. That was fine with him. Ultimately, he wanted his daughters to take as much as they wanted as a way to remember Ava forever.
Ava was gone. And no matter how much he hated thinking about it, wished he could reverse what happened, it would never change.
It was time to move on.
Heâd grabbed several cardboard boxes, a roll of tape, and other packing essentials heâd had left over when theyâd gone through the closet in the spare bedroom.
He opened three of them up, folded them, taped the bottoms, and set them in the middle of the room.
In less than two hours, Avaâs desk and shelving system sat empty. Everything from within was either in a bag headed for the trash, a box for donations, or sealed up and ready for his daughters.
