Another page of the analysis of Japanese radio traffic planning Midway’s invasion. This page notes the abrupt change of the Japanese code, days before the planned attack.

Midway was connected to Honolulu by an old seafloor cable that Japanese eavesdroppers could not tap. Knowing that arid Midway depended upon desalinated water, one of the dungeon dwellers had an idea. Midway’s radio operators were told via the cable to send a false message. This was what they were instructed to do:

…send a plain language message to Com 14 [Commandant, 14th Naval District—Pearl Harbor] stating in effect, that the distillation plant had suffered a serious casualty and that fresh water was urgently needed—to which Com 14 would reply, (also in plain language), that water barges would be sent, under tow, soonest…
