Keegan

Monday, December 11th

As soon as we arrived inside my home with bags wrapped around our wrists like jewelry, Mika made herself at home, just as I hoped she would. While I smiled at the woman walking into the front room, she approvingly voiced, “Beautiful home. Very spacious for one person. Why didn’t you settle for something smaller?”

“Why settle when I knew a woman and kids would arrive when the time was right?” I inquired as she turned on the radio.

“I love the way you think. Major brownie point,” she grinned as Jeremih featuring Ludacris’ “I Like” roamed through the spotless living quarters.

Nodding, I chuckled. While eyeing the family photos on the khaki walls, she said, “Your mom looks miserable in these pictures.”

“Because she was,” I responded, removing the items from the gray plastic bags. I knew she would run across something that would cause her to learn interesting facts about me. Facts that would deepen our conversation from New Orleans.

“Keegan?” she softly voiced, causing me to look at her.

“Yes?” I answered, no longer moving and giving her my undivided attention.

“Um, Violet isn’t your biological mother, is she?” she lowly voiced, staring at me.

I shook my head and responded, “Nor is she to Knox and Keaton. We are products of Dad’s first love interest.”

“Come the fuck again?” she awkwardly voiced, tilting her head to the right.

I laughed. “Karolyn, our biological mom, was Momma’s best friend. Karolyn, aka Ma, was pregnant with Knox when Dad and Momma married. Momma brought out the claws, so Knox became her son through adoption. Dad spun the gotdamn block again; Ma became pregnant with Keaton. The same shit happened again. Momma was pissed about him having kids with the woman he really loved, so she demanded a child. Instead of giving her a child, he gave Ma me. The bitching about his political career being ruined before it started was tossed into his face, along with his infidelity. Vega entered the scene, followed by Virgil. No one is the wiser until they see photos only in my home. The Walker kids resemble their father, not their mothers.”

Walking toward me, the astonished woman comically said, “Well, skin me the fuck up and eat me. I’m a deer in headlights in this fine home. So, do you have a relationship with Karolyn?”

“Absolutely. That’s my first favorite lady,” I grinned, needing to chat with the woman who had always been the highlight of my life.

“When did you learn she was your mother?” Mika sweetly asked, arriving at the island and grabbing two bags.

“I’ve always known. She had visitation rights. I talk to her daily. Since you arrived, I haven’t chatted with her like usual.”

“Do Keaton and Knox have a relationship with her as you do?” she inquired, slowly swaying to Ciara’s “Body Party”.

“No. They despise her. They felt as if she didn’t want to be a mother since she gave us up so easily.”

Slowly nodding, she said, “So, that’s why you only have the photos of y’all.”

“Correct.”

“How do Vega and Virgil take it?”

“When they were old enough to understand, they were shocked.
