CHAPTER ELEVEN

“Happy Birthday to my favorite nurse.”I sang, kissing December’s cheek.

“Jay, what a surprise!” She smiled when I rolled into the nurse’s station.

“It’s your birthday, what’s the surprise?” I laughed.

“I didn’t expect to see you, since I’m working.”

I took her hand and winked at the head nurse. “I know you’re working, but I’m taking you for a lunch break.”

She looked behind her as I tugged her toward the elevator, “But….”

“It’s quiet, December. Take an extra half an hour. We’ll be fine.” Teresa waved as we stood at the elevator.

“Okay, but text me if you get busy.” She answered back as the elevator dinged and I pulled her in.

The doors slid shut and she stood in front of my chair, holding my hands. “Did you just steal me away from my work?”

I tugged her towards me, pulling her hands to my legs until her lips were within kissing distance. “I did, and now I’m going to give you a birthday kiss.”

She willingly leaned in and kissed me back, my hands coming up to capture her neck and angle her into me better. She was just about to climb on my lap when the elevator dinged and she jumped away, straightening her shirt as though her father was standing by the door.

I pulled her out of the elevator and she stopped short looking around, “Wrong floor, Jay. Cafeteria is a few floors down.”

I turned Sport enough to raise a brow at her, “I know where the cafeteria is, but I’m not taking you to the cafeteria for your birthday. That would be a punishment, not a gift.”

She laughed freely, agreeing with a shake of her head. “That’s true, but we don’t really have time to go anywhere else.” She fretted and I motioned her to follow me.

I stopped at my office door and unlocked it hearing her short intake of breath at the sight in front of her. I rolled in and she followed, pushing the door shut behind her.

“Jay, this is….,” she paused and I turned towards her, just in time to see her eyes welling with tears, “the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me.”

She hung her head to hide her tears, but I heard her voice crack. I locked the chair and called her to me. “Come here, babe.” I motioned for her to sit on my lap, but she shook her head.

“I don’t want to hurt you.” She frowned.

“You won’t, I promise. Sit on my lap and swing your legs over the wheel. I need to hold you.”

She did as I asked and laid her head on my shoulder. I wrapped my arms around her and held her tight, sneaking a kiss against her lips. “No one’s ever surprised you on your birthday?”

She sighed, “No, birthdays were any other day in our family. We spent them at the restaurant. After my father died, we never celebrated anything anymore. I’ve never had a birthday party. When I left home I tried to change that, but it never worked out.
