Chapter Nineteen

NATE GARRETT

British Columbia, Canada, Earth Realm

The drive from Kilnhurst to our destination at Lake Louise in British Columbia had taken the better part of a day, and while I’d sat there and digested the memories of both Masako and Atlas, it hadn’t seemed like anyone else was all that talkative. Even Remy, who usually couldn’t be silenced with superglue and a roll of gaffer tape, had been quiet. A quiet Remy concerned me. Unfortunately, after absorbing all of the information in my head, and with my body adjusting to the vast amounts of power it had taken from the spirits, I’d needed to sleep, so I’d drifted off for several hours.

I woke up as we reached the outskirts of what used to be the town of Claresholm and was now a giant ruin. Avalon forces had taken the city nearly a year ago and decimated it, along with the several other towns in Canada where Hades had been influential. Avalon had left it a ghost town on purpose, never allowing anyone to come back here. From what I’d heard, Avalon had arrived at Calgary and Edmonton and told those in charge that they now fell under Avalon control. Claresholm had been used as an example to ensure that everyone else bowed as necessary. Avalon had gone through Canada and done similar things in any towns where they’d decided dissidents could be lurking.

“The city was on fire for months,” Sky said from the front seat.

“It wasn’t the most fun thing ever,” Remy said.

Kase drove, while Zamek sat in the rear seat of the seven-seat four-wheel drive, leaving just Remy and me in the middle seats.

“You okay?” I asked him.

“Glorious,” Remy said with a wink.

“Remy, no bullshit,” I said. “What’s wrong? And don’t say nothing, because even I’m capable of figuring out that something is wrong.”

“He won’t say,” Zamek said. “We’ve been asking. He just says he’ll be okay. He is being stubborn.”

“Or maybe I really will be okay,” Remy said. He paused for a second and then sighed. “I change powers every time I die.”

“Seriously?” Kase asked.

Remy nodded. “I spent a year learning how it works. Every time I die, I get a different set of powers. Unfortunately, I have no way of knowing what powers they are or how they work. It took me centuries to even learn that I had extra powers at all, and now I’m back to square one. No turning human. No vanishing in a puff of smoke. So yes, I’m a bit irritated about it. Frankly, this fucking well sucks massive balls.”

“Nice image,” Sky said.

“I could use more adjectives if you’d like,” Remy replied. “Also, I’m a bit pissed off that War caught me. I was of no use, and I almost got Nate killed because of it.”

“I think you’re being too hard on yourself,” I said. “I think the past few days have been hard on everyone. Don’t worry, Remy. It’s fine.”

“And I liked Masako,” Remy continued. “She was weird. I sort of gravitate toward weird people.
