Christopher Newton

How can you tell when an execution is taking way too long to complete? When the condemned man has to ask for a bathroom break in the middle of it. It sounds bizarre, but that’s only one of the many curious aspects of Christopher Newton’s life and death.

Newton spent most of his early years in trouble. The high school dropout was arrested multiple times for offenses that ranged from shoplifting candy bars to grand theft. Despite his good sense of humor and his reputation as the “class clown,” Newton also had an unhealthy interest in Satanism and a habit of performing questionable acts, such as inappropriate sexual behavior and setting his family’s house on fire.

After being released from prison following a 7-year sentence for burglary, Newton had a hard time adjusting to the outside world. A few weeks later Newton burglarized his own father’s house, purposefully leaving behind plenty of fingerprints. Newton was convicted and sentenced to another 8-to-15-year prison term, achieving his goal of getting back to the one place he felt safe and comfortable. But once he was back in prison, Newton apparently changed his mind.

“You don’t want to spend your life in a hell hole,” he once remarked. “Nothing against the prison system, but it’s not the funnest place to be.”

Newton decided that since he didn’t want to live in prison and couldn’t live outside of prison, he didn’t want to live at all. Through a series of lies and manipulations, the 6-foot, 225-lb convict arranged to share a cell with Jason Brewer, a man only half his size. Newton then waited for his new cellmate to aggravate him so that Newton would have an excuse to kill him.

It wasn’t long before Newton got his wish. After an argument over a game of chess, the big convict flew into a violent rage.

“He kept giving up,” Newton later explained. “Every time I put him in check, he’d give up and want to start a new game. And I tried to tell him you never give up. You never know when your opponent is going to make a mistake, so you play it out until you can’t play it out any more. I just got tired of it.”

In a rather drastic version of “checkmate,” Newton punched, kicked, and stomped Brewer, then slammed the other man’s head against the floor. When Brewer didn’t seem to be bleeding enough, Newton stomped him some more. He then strangled the other man with a strip of cloth torn from his prison jumpsuit.

When correctional officers rushed to the cell, they found a smiling Newton sitting there calmly with blood smeared on his face. “Welcome to the house of death!” he exclaimed. As paramedics tried to revive Brewer, Newton laughed and said, “Let him die. I killed him. Fuck that bitch. You might as well not even work on him. He’s already dead.” Newton then began singing a made-up song that included the lyrics, “There’s nothing like the taste of fresh blood in the morning.
