It was the following night. Rested, bathed, fed, briefed, promised good faith on a stack of relics, provided with all necessary things, Rodi stood beside the little eunuch who, for the moment, had taken over as Antony’s replacement.

“When I open the side gate, you run for it. Don’t stop running. If anyone’s looking, you need to make it clear that this is an escape. Do you understand?”

Rodi had been through the plan more than once with Eleutherius. He didn’t need some underling to remind him. Not looking at the eunuch, he nodded.

“The walls have been cleared?”

“We’ve laid on a night execution. The Lord Exarch has found someone to impale. The walls should be empty – but keep up the pretence, even so.”

A mile along the causeway, Rodi slowed to a brisk walk. Another half mile, and he sat down to re-lace his boots. He’d been aware some while of the soft padding of feet behind him.

“What’s the price on my head tonight, Scruto?”

“Fifty solidi.”

“I’m worth every ounce of it, and more.”

“So why were you taken from the Residency and allowed to get away?”

Rodi had known they were followed to the gate.

“Is there anything I can say to make you go home to your bed?”

“I’ve never had a bed.”

“Then stop asking questions. You’ll get no answers, and they’d do you no good if you did get them.”

He let Scruto help him to his feet. Arm in arm, they set out along the causeway.
