According to the coroner’s report, a knot from Michael’s belt had been tied to the automatic door closure. He had strained his head forward into the loop so hard that the buckle broke. After management was alerted, followed by the police and medical examiners, he was pronounced dead at 12:30 PM.

Some rumors dismissed the death as a suicide, suggesting that an appreciation for rough sex had led Michael to an act of autoeroticism that involved self-strangulation. Gossip took him from rock star to tabloid celebrity in a matter of days, and though dismissed by the police and coroner, the autoeroticism rumor stuck, making his suicide more memorable than his body of work.

With the pack of people surrounding him—personal manager, accountant, lawyers, tour manager, bodyguard, publicist, record company, management company, roadies, assistants, bandmates, friends and family, and his fiancée—it’s impossible to imagine that between 9:50 and 11:00 AM there wasn’t anyone he could have called to talk him down.

Though “Never Tear Us Apart” became his anthem, other of his songs—“The Devil Inside,” “Slide Away,” or “Need You Tonight”—seem more fitting to describe him, his life, and his final state of mind.
