CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

The monthly donut and discussion meeting had never been dotted with so many empty seats. Mr. Right took his usual spot toward the front of the long conference table, only three chairs down from Malcolm’s makeshift podium. Malcolm rustled papers with gusto, but Mr. Right knew for a fact that the papers were blank. Malcolm just liked to appear official.

“Everyone here?” Malcolm asked as the stragglers took their seats. Mr. Right glanced around without turning his head, noting that Grace and Balance were absent. “Listen, I only ordered two dozen donuts this time, so go easy on them. I mean, I think there’ll be enough, but some people don’t know when to stop.” He laughed and rustled the papers some more, before clearing his throat and pinching his mouth into a straight line.

Jessica strolled into the room, clapping the door shut behind her. She angled her body into a chair with a certain cool finesse that only a very mischievous cat could manage. She turned her head to Malcolm. “I apologize for being late, but I had some projects that needed finishing. Please continue.”

Malcolm scratched at his face, as if to call attention to his latest mustache attempt. If Death had been sitting in his usual spot, at the other end of the table, he’d surely be chomping on a donut and snickering behind his gloves about Malcolm and his string of adventures in unsuccessful facial hair.

Mr. Right pushed Death from his mind and withdrew a pen from inside his jacket, ready to take notes. Even if Malcolm had turned the meetings into fluff and meaningless chatter, a man was still obligated to learn what he could about his agency.

“So, by now you’ve probably met a few of our interns,” Malcolm said. “I like them. I have to say, I really like them. They’re new recruits and they’re on fire for their job.” He and Jessica exchanged a glance and then he rustled his papers even more aggressively than before. “We want that. We need people who’re serious about their work and serious about the agency. I’ve seen a lot of interesting things since becoming manager, and I’d just like to take this moment to, uh, to congratulate those of you who have gone the extra mile.”

Mr. Right heard whispering from the other end of the table, but didn’t turn his head to see who it was.

“I think giving credit where it’s due is good, so I’m going to just say this right now. Mr. Right, you’ve proven your devotion to your job, and to the agency. We all offer you a round of applause and our greatest uhhh…” Malcolm paused. “Our greatest appreciation.”

Light applause sounded from around the table.

“Anyway, on to more important, uh, on to other things. It’s been brought to my attention that someone has been leaving their—”

“Where’s Grace?”

Mr. Right turned his head, matching the meek voice to the equally meek face of Gentleness. Mr. Right looked back at Malcolm, as surprised as anyone that Gentleness had spoken up during a meeting.
