Chapter 9

Having the werewolf tag along as I dragged the soul of a murderous warlock to Hell should have been enough to make her want to move on to the afterlife. Not all of Hell was ugly, but a warlock who’d killed seven witches in cold blood wasn’t going to get a chateau overlooking the River of Fire.

After the warlock was processed into Hell by Hades, I offered to take the evil soul to his assigned prison. I didn’t usually make that offer, but I was trying to get rid of an annoying werewolf and willing to do just about anything.

The werewolf didn’t speak the entire time we were in Hell. When I looked over my shoulder to see her reaction a few times, her mouth was slightly ajar and her eyes wide as she took in every horrific detail.

Once we made it back to the human realm, she finally spoke. “Wow! What do the witches think when they visit there? I heard it’s going to be the next big tourist attraction, but I don’t see how that could happen. It was cool, but why would you want to go more than once? I’ll bet the smell is awful if you’re still alive. Hey! I finally found something positive about being dead. That doesn’t mean I plan to stay dead, just that I’m glad I couldn’t smell that place.”

“It’s not pleasant in that area,” I agreed. “I’m beginning to see why you died so young. Your curiosity is dangerous.”

“My curiosity can be beneficial,” she argued. “I wish I hadn’t been curious about The Cauldron. Had I stayed home like my mother wanted, I’d still be alive. It’s been cool traveling around with you, but I’d rather be alive.”

“Your afterlife will be all right,” I assured her. “In fact, it’s going to be rather nice. You’ll also see your mother again, unless she goes on a killing spree. If that happens, I’ll have to take her to Hell.”

“That is a truly awful image to put into my mind,” she accused. “Why would you want to make me think about my mother in Hell? She’s not a bad werewolf.”

“Then there’s no reason for you to imagine her there,” I pointed out.

“We need to get to work on how to save your friend’s baby,” she announced.

“Why?” I asked. “I’ve been around thousands of years, and I can’t come up with a solution, so I doubt you can.”

“That’s rude,” she accused. “I know you’re in a bad mood. Maybe a shower and a change of clothes would help.”

I looked at my Santa costume. There were black smudges, one sleeve had been torn off, and I had several tears in my pant legs. Not only had the warlock been resistant to being transported to Hell, other prisoners in his section had been in the mood for a fight.

“I like it better this way,” I replied. “Though it might be best if I get back to my usual clothing. We’ll stop by my place so I can change.
