“I’ll get it. I bet the kid figured out how to use the doorbell,” I joked as I went to the front door of the apartment while Keir was still dressing.

After we made love, which was damn sure a first for me, we stayed in bed and just talked. We laughed about some of the shit I used to do as a kid, and he told me about pranking David Dearly in the mortuary by moving equipment around when his father was preoccupied. Little did he know back then that there were plenty of ghosts down there who did the same thing. His father never caught on that it was him.

I honestly felt light and filled with happiness, which was unusual for me. That was until I opened the door to see Jay Frick standing there with grocery bags. “Clegg,” he greeted, breezing by me without being invited in.

I slid my glasses down my nose and checked him with my right eye, seeing his aura was pale gray, which wasn’t a big surprise. The cops I’d had experience with all had darkness inside them, so I’d assumed Frick’s spirit was black as tar.

I reached for the hair band in my pocket and pulled my wet locks back in a bun. “Come on in,” I said as I closed the door. The kid’s spirit slid in behind him, which made me chuckle. I looked down to see Frick had scuffed his shoe over the salt, making a break in the line, the big dummy. That explained why the kid got in—if it was true that salt could keep him out.

“Why doesn’t every-fucking-body just come on in,” I mumbled as I padded down the hall barefoot while Frick went into the kitchen and seemed to make himself at home. He knew where everything was without having to look very hard, so I had to wonder how many times he’d been there that I didn’t know about. It was before. Let it go.

I opened the bedroom door and stuck in my head. “Frick’s here, and the kid’s up here, too. Frick fucked up the salt. Think we can somehow make it permanent so it’ll keep Frick out, too?”

Keir laughed as he finished straightening the bed and stepped into his loafers. He was wearing the navy sweater I’d bought him for Christmas, his nice shirt now toast after he ripped it open so I could get to him faster. I picked it up and looked at it. “It’s a nice shirt. I can’t sew, but I bet Jo can.”

Keir picked up the three buttons scattered around the room, which was when I noticed the top three were intact. “Hey, you could wear it like a belly top and tie up the bottom so I can see that sexy trail that leads me to the promised land.”

Keir stood still, put his hands on his hips, and stared at me. “Is that all I am to you—a sex toy?” After a second, we both laughed.

“Yep. My private sex toy,” I told him as I snagged his arm and pulled him closer to kiss his soft mouth.
