Chapter Fourteen
Putting distance between Gemma and him sat paramount in Seanâs mind since the day of his impromptu bicycle built for two outing.
Sheâd been amazingly brave and funny and adorable.
His heart still skipped a beat when he thought about herâbreaking free of her tried and true schedule and plansâand swooping down that bridge like she owned it.
And later, on the sidewalk, heâd had an incredible urge to stare into her eyes, lean down, and then kiss her lips. He imagined they were soft and warm.
Sean shook himself. Get a grip!
What had happened for him to start thinking about Gemma in that way?
She eased into his thoughts and wrapped around him in ways he never knew possible.
âStop! Now!â He focused on where he was and what heâd accomplished for his project. âWork. More work.â
Sean had filled his last two days with meeting the other tenants in the block of buildings, preparing to close up. Heâd checked on their status, took hundreds of measurements and pictures, envisioned the types of businesses the client would be successful with here, and then wrote half a dozen emails to his boss and the clientâBenjamin Caruthersâwith the reports and information.
At night, he huddled over the scale model, adding details and finding heâd liked some of the old charm and feel to the block. Heâd adapted and included a few of those touches.
Sean was certain Gemma played a part in those choices.
âHer again?â He zipped up his coat and headed down the street, bracing himself against the chill and the over-the-top Valentineâs decorations cluttering the many businesses.
Red and white and pink was everywhereâbig red cupids on street posts, glittery red and white hearts strung across the building fronts, pink heart-shaped balloons bobbed near doorways.
âCupidâs Corner delighting in its own holiday less than two weeks away.â But Sean grinned at the display, knowing they were going all out for the very last time.
Things were going well in Seanâs work and with the townâs people. Other than he felt out of touch with his officeâthe hustle, the bustle, knowing what his two competitors were up toâhowever, progress happened on his project.
He couldnât let Whitney and Gordon beat him. He had to win this one.
In his mind, he pictured his new officeâa much needed step up from the sad cubicle he now occupied in one big area with his fellow coworkers, also in their miniature work stations.
The designated office that went with the promotion couldnât be called much better; however, it allowed more elbow room and storage space. Also, it came with the knowledge that the qualified person who received it got plum projects and had climbed one more rung on the mighty ladder.
Walking briskly along the now crowded sidewalk, Seanâs cell phone buzzed. He dug it out of his pocket and read the caller ID. He answered it before the next ring finished. âPenelope? Whatâs up?â
âNot so good news, friend.â
He slowed, picturing the receptionist biting the end of her pencil. Sean shifted to get out of the human traffic as they went along the sidewalk to their next stop.
