JOANNA
Joanna slammed the front door and jumped into her car. She speeded up Laurel Canyon and through a fog that seemed much denser than before. The streetlights were a blur, the air so heavy with humidity that drops were forming on the windshield. But the higher Joanna went the better the visibility became, and when she turned onto Mulholland Drive the night was crystal clear.
She pushed down on the accelerator and took the sharp turns nicely, but her tires began to squeal so she forced herself to slow down. So simple, she kept saying to herself, and right in front of our faces. And so easy to prove. Just get an X ray of Sally Wheatonâs pacemaker. The Department of Radiology at Memorial would be closed now, but there was an X-ray unit in the ER. One X ray and sheâd have the answer.
Glancing at the rearview mirror Joanna saw a set of headlights closing in fast. She slowed down even more and pulled over to the right a little to let the driver pass.
She couldnât pull over very much because there was only a narrow shoulder to the road and beyond that there was a steep cliff that dropped a thousand feet to the valley below.
The headlights were almost upon her now, the bright beams shining in the rearview mirror and blinding her for a moment. The car behind slammed into her rear, propelling her car toward the narrow shoulder. She jerked at the steering wheel, trying to bring the car back to the center of the road. The car behind separated briefly and then slammed into her again, moving her back to the shoulder.
Fear flooded through Joanna as she realized what was happening. She fought to keep her car on the road, but now their bumpers were somehow locked and he was pushing her toward the edge. She stood on the brake pedal but it made no difference. Slowly the car behind pushed Joannaâs car across the shoulder. The nose of her car tilted over the edge and she saw the sparkling lights of the valley a thousand feet below.
She pulled at the door handle. Locked! Frantically she tried to open the door. The car behind her backed up, paused for a moment, then slammed into Joannaâs car and pushed it out into the blackness. Joanna felt as if she was suspended in space. Everything seemed to be happening very slowly. She had plenty of time to scream before her car smashed into the rocks below and the windshield shattered in her face.
Jake quickly went through the file on Will Patterson. It was thin and offered little insight into the man. Patterson had been born in a small town in Indiana that no longer existed and had been raised by grandparents who were now dead. His military record in Vietnam was undistinguished. He had served two tours, received no medals or decorations. âThereâs nothing much here.â
âThere is if you read between the lines,â said William Buck, director of a sensitive intelligence unit in the Los Angeles Police Department.
