Chapter Six

The offices of Pride & Harkness were housed in an elegant Victorian building in the older part of Mircester city centre, less than half a mile from the Raisin Investigations office, on the other side of Mircester Abbey. Gerald Pride trotted down the stone steps outside the building, his briefcase in one hand, his mobile phone clamped to his ear with the other.

“Yes, I know I said I’d have it all sorted out by now, but things haven’t gone entirely to plan, have they?” he said, his voice tight with irritation. There was a pause while he listened to the response, crossing the narrow street to where his car was parked in a private bay.

“Okay, calm down,” he said, opening the door and throwing his briefcase onto the passenger seat. “I’ll be there in a few minutes.”

As he pulled out of the parking bay and drove off along the cobbled street, another car fell in behind him. The second car followed him, sometimes just a few car lengths behind, sometimes with a couple of cars between them. They travelled out of town through an area of low-rent shops selling the sort of second-hand sofas and scruffy appliances with which unscrupulous landlords furnished over-priced rental flats.

Before long, Gerald turned right onto a road that led into a small, neat estate of fairly modern, modest, semi-detached houses. He parked in the short driveway of one of the houses and a dark-haired woman met him at the front door. They embraced, kissed and went inside.

The driver of the second car, Toni Gilmour, took one last photo, then reached across to place her camera safely on the floor in the passenger footwell.

As if he didn’t have enough to deal with, she thought to herself, Gerald Pride is carrying on with another woman. That’s yet another mark against our prime suspect.

She considered whether to wait for him to emerge, then decided that she had enough with the photographs. The most important thing now was to find out who the woman was. It was a little late to go back to the office, so she turned the car to head for home.
