âMax, Iâve got, um, a question,â Petra said.
âIâm all ears,â Max replied as he hunted through the locker heâd finally managed to get open. There was less stuff in here than heâd hoped for, but it wasnât empty.
âItâs kind of a... weird question,â she murmured.
âPetra, Iâll say this here and now: never be afraid of asking me anything. I know people are unpredictable, but I at least can promise I wonât just snap at you if you ask something really sensitive. If itâs private, Iâll tell you. If I donât want to answer, Iâll tell you. Ideally, this is a two-way street.â
âThis works very well for me,â she replied, but she still seemed uncomfortable. âHow do you deal with... death? I mean, specifically, you dying. Risking your life like this for so long... you must have found a way to get past it.â
âI did. Or, I suppose, it found me.â
âWhat was it?â
âItâs a disappointing answer, but perhaps a reassuring one. The simple truth of the matter is that I was pretty fucking terrified when I was first facing death. First at the hands of psychotic bullies that Sierra and I had to teach a hard, hard lesson. Then later assholes who were looking to kill and rob us. And finally situations like this. The infected. And the answer to how I came to stop fearing death is... I didnât. I still fear death. However, the secret youâre looking for is this: you will eventually stop being deeply afraid of it if you experience it often enough.â
âThat canât possibly be true,â she replied after considering it.
âWell... okay, maybe itâs not completely accurate. But I thought about this, and basically, fearing for your life is fucking exhausting. Like, legitimately, it wears you the hell out. You can only do it for so long. I still fear death. I donât want to die. I really donât want to die. But that panicky jolt that kicks you in the gut with a frozen boot? It diminishes naturally if you experience it frequently enough, and you can further diminish it by practicing, by being more intentional, telling yourself that if you donât react, and react fast, you will fucking die.â
âHmm.â
She fell silent. He let her chew over that as he finished up his search of the locker and then moved over to the desk. They were in what looked to be a combination office/break room. The place had been long since tossed, but not completely drained of resources or hiding places.
He and Sierra had managed to save the ammo after that initial battle, using nothing but their blades as they prowled through the Storage Facility. There were ten Shamblers in total. Once they were dealt with, heâd called the others in and theyâd begun their search.
So far, there wasnât much. Sierra and Lexi were downstairs on the main floor, which was almost completely empty, trying to break into just a single crate that was left far off in a shadowed corner. It was unmarked, so it could be anything.
