It took the French another week to come to the conclusion that they had no resort but to surrender. Hitler, whose earliest opponent had been France, had prepared a unique method of revenge for Germany's loss of the Great War. An acquaintance involved with the ceremony later told of the elaborate preparations that the Führer had undertaken.
Hitler had ordered the same rail car used in the degrading German surrender twenty-two years prior pulled from its museum and towed to the exact same spot in the Compiegne forest where it had first been employed. There, the Führer forced the French peace delegates into a humiliating surrender display.
Despite his posturing, Hitler provided France a good deal. He insisted only that territory already occupied, plus a narrow strip of coastline stretching to Spain, be surrendered to Germany. The southern half of France he magnanimously allowed the French to govern. Of course, he ensured that the subjugated nation would present neither military nor political threat to the Fatherland.
To celebrate his victory Hitler took a whirlwind tour of Paris, accompanied by his closest compatriots. The Führer visited some of the places he had long pined to see: opera houses, museums, the Champs Elysees, and the tomb of his hero, Napoleon.
At the pinnacle of unprecedented power, Hitler danced an impromptu jig before returning to the Fatherland.
