Chapter fourteen

Harlow

I watch as the sun fades in the evening sky, while holding tightly to Declan.

Driving home, my world seems to have been flipped upside down. I have no idea how I got here, but I know there is no turning back now.

Beautiful shades of pinks and oranges paint the sky as we pull up to my house. I hesitate before releasing my hold on Declan, unsure if I really want this moment to end or not. When he kissed me, I felt like something inside of me came alive. Like the piece of me who had died with my parents, was resurrected.

Declan helps me off the bike and we stand there next to the curb, both of us not wanting the moment to end.

“Thank you for today,” I finally say, breaking the silence hanging heavy between us.

“I want to see you again,” Declan states, holding my hands tightly in his.

“We go to school together. You are bound to see me,” I say, allowing my sarcasm to take over. I’m a nervous wreck and I hate how my sarcasm seems to come out when I don’t want to say how I’m truly feeling.

Declan chuckles at this and I smile. “Harlow, this isn’t the end. We are going to figure everything out together. I will talk to you tomorrow,” he says, leaning in and placing a soft kiss to my lips.

In one swift movement, he hops on his bike and speeds away, leaving me standing alone and speechless.

Once I find the ability to walk again, I manage to make it inside my house where Scarlett is standing next to the door. An expectant smile plays on her lips and embarrassment floods me.

“Who was that?” Scarlett asks me.

“Just a friend,” I manage, as I go to slide past her on my way to the stairs.

“That didn’t look like a friend to me. He kissed you,” she squeals and I cringe.

I stop walking and turn to face her. Scarlett and Penny are both at my heels and I almost bump into them. Penny snorts and Scarlett giggles at her annoyance. For a dog, she sure has the personality of a teenage girl.

“His name is Declan and he is new to Willow Falls. We went out tonight. We are figuring everything out,” I rush out.

Nodding, Scarlett only smiles.

“I remember seeing him at your birthday party. I wonder if he is part of the family that bought the old Sanderson house outside of town. A young guy purchased the property. One of the brokers at my firm handled the deal,” Scarlett contemplates aloud.

“Maybe,” I say, shrugging my shoulders.

“I’m heading to bed. I have homework I need to work on,” I tell Scarlett.

I begin bounding up the stairs and I hear her call out behind me, “I will bring you some dinner later.”

I hop into the shower and allow the warm water to wash away the day. A smile breaks free as I think back to what happened between me and Declan. I know it’s wrong that I have allowed him to get close to me, but I just can’t help it.
