DARWIN’S DEATH

Father and son were still doing botanical experiments two days before Charles’s death. Frank, Henrietta, Elizabeth, and Emma were with Charles when he died on 19 April 1882. Frank, the medical doctor, could not find his father’s pulse in those last few moments (R. Keynes 2001). He explained to a questioning Bernard that “Grandpa has been so ill that he won’t be ill any more” (Desmond and Moore 1991). It fell to Frank and George to notify Charles’s scientific colleagues of his death.
