Reining her horse in, Lexi was glad to have caught up to Taylor. When she finished dropping off Anna at the hospital, Lexi had intended to go check in with Jackie and her wife, but as she made her way into the center of town, she noticed Taylor leaving the stables. Normally, Lexi would have called hello to her, but a part of her also feared alarming the horse she rode. She had yet to find a comfortable manner with her mount, and at best, they held a truce. Planning to let her go and find Jackie instead, Lexi’s horse had other ideas. She wanted to follow Taylor’s stallion. Even when Lexi sawed at the reins to make her stop, there was no deterring the animal. After a moment, they were trotting in the same direction as Taylor. All of which was how she ended up sitting outside a bar with what she thought was a clever name. Northern Lights Saloon.

This is new, she thought and decided to give riding her uncooperative horse a break to investigate further. After slipping to the ground and tying her horse to the hitching post, Lexi wandered toward the front only to hear a man introducing himself as Jeramy Jones. She wasn’t familiar with the name, but there were hundreds of refugees who had moved in and thankfully pulled their weight. Someone new to town with a creative streak.

“It’s a pleasure to finally meet you,” she heard the same voice say and hesitated at the swinging double doors. Taylor was likely there for official business, as having a drink at nine a.m. seemed unlikely. Assuming they actually have alcohol in there, she thought. Spirits were a rare commodity, and the stills operating in the woods around Astoria made popular trade goods. “What brings you to the Northern Lights?”

“I wanted to see what was behind the newest idea around,” she heard Taylor answer, her tone cool, giving Lexi a sense she wasn’t thrilled with the prospect. “It’s certain to make a bit of a stir in what is a peaceful, thriving town.”

“Won’t it, though?” Jeramy said with excitement in his voice. It was clear he was oblivious to Taylor’s attitude. “I’ve come to love Astoria in the last few months, and I only want to bring some entertainment to folks.”

Deciding she couldn’t simply stand at the doors and eavesdrop, Lexi knocked on the doorjamb. “Hello?” she said. “Can I come in?”

Both Taylor and Jeramy looked in her direction with surprise on their faces. “Hello, Lexi,” Taylor said, recovering smoothly. “Thanks for stopping by.”

Not sure what to make of the statement, Lexi decided to roll with it and stepped inside. “Of course,” she said. “I wanted to see what this was all about.” She looked at Jeramy, who grinned from ear to ear. Everything about him radiated eagerness to show off his saloon.

Taylor nodded at the long counter. “A place for townsfolk to come and unwind, apparently,” she said, looking at the saloon’s owner. “Jeramy, let me introduce Lexi Scott, my sister-in-law and a highly respected influencer in town.
