Johnny Gebert and George Grasso, in my eyes, were two disloyal, uneducated, low-level street thugs. George had two brothers, Chris and Luis, who were part of the gang and they were no different..
The majority of the 7N9 Gang members were okay guys and the minority were garbage like Johnny Gebert. Those members who were degenerate were out of control, completely wild. They had morals like any two-bit junkie on the streets, with no care if they raped or robbed an innocent person. Guys like Johnny wanted to control our area. They sold drugs, robbed and beat people, and didn’t hesitate to kill or maim anyone who got in their way. Most would turn on their own mother if they thought it meant earning a profit.
But there were also a select few who were decent guys, some like Timmy Donahue and George Catalano. They’re great friends of mine, and very protective of the people who live in our neighborhood. Gang members like them just happened to be on the wrong path, but they were just like me in many ways, trying to make a buck and get out of our financial situation. Whether right or wrong, they were trying to find their way out of the streets, just like me.
The gang itself was far ahead of its time in regards to their aggressive and violent behavior. They carried knives and guns, not thinking twice about using them on anyone who challenged them, and at age sixteen, Johnny G. had already killed another kid.
My brother Jimmy and I were tough and aggressive, but we were just fighting with our hands. We didn’t carry around weapons the way this gang did. My father was adamant about my brother and me standing on our own and not being part of any gang. He taught us that we didn’t need a group of guys behind us in order for people to fear us.
My father was a great lecturer, constantly nagging us to do things like brush our teeth, all the way to more serious stuff. Every chance he got, he’d give us a talking to, saying, “Don’t be a punk. Don’t be part of the gangs. You can be friends with them, but don’t join them.” No matter what kind of pressure was put upon me or my brother to join, we resisted.
The two of us never wore jackets, or colors, and we only hung out with these guys on occasion. It was convenient to be friends with a lot of the gang members. We got the benefit of hanging out with them, but we were still able to maintain our independence. Kind of like what my father was doing with his own ties to the mafia. He was friends with a lot of gangsters, but wasn’t part of their crew.
“Listen, I had a problem with Chris Grasso today,” my brother informs me as we approach the J train. “We got into a bit of an argument in school. He was hoping he could intimidate me, and because he’s involved with the gang, he thought I’d back down.
