We move now to another story about destiny, and a departure for Fiction River Presents. These anthologies will be almost exclusively reprints of Fiction River stories—with rare exceptions. This story by World Fantasy Award-winner Kristine Kathryn Rusch is one such exception. I could not possibly put together a volume called Darker Realms without including this prequel story for Kris’ amazing epic fantasy series, The Fey.

Kris’ credits are far too numerous to list in a short fiction anthology magazine. They include nominations for almost every award in the science fiction and fantasy fields, as well as many wins. This year alone, she’s won both the Asimov’s Readers Choice Award, the AnLab Readers Award (for Analog Magazine), and was shortlisted for best short story of the year in Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine. In 2016, her short fiction will also appear in four best of the year anthologies. Kris is also one of the series editors for Fiction River, along with her husband, Dean Wesley Smith, and has contributed stories to almost every volume.
