Bernie swiped and punched on the digital screen in the wall a couple more times. From the table, Lance couldn’t see what was displayed on the screen, but he saw the urgency in Bernie’s stature.

“It’s coming fast,” Bernie said. “Too fast.” He turned and looked to Leah and Lance at the table and smirked. “Guess they were going too fast to read the warning signs, so let’s go have some fun, shall we?” Then he turned and headed out of the kitchen and down the hallway which they’d came, his boots echoing down the corridor.

“What’s that mean?” Leah asked as she and Lance quickly stood and followed.

“You read the signs,” Lance said. “Whoever’s in that car, I don’t think they’re going to be greeted with coffee and pie.”

“He wouldn’t really … shoot them, would he?”

Lance shrugged. “If they’re a threat, I think he might.” Then added, “Sorta reminds me of your dad.”

Leah groaned. “Oh God, you’re right. They’re goners.”

Lance had made the joke, but in reality he had to wonder just who was in the car speeding up the driveway of a man whom nobody came to visit. And more importantly, why were they coming?

Because of you, a voice in the back of his head whispered. Just like all the rest of this awfulness.

When Lance and Leah made it back to the landing, Bernie was standing at the door with a pump-action shotgun in his hands and staring out the window next to the door, waiting. “Should be any moment now,” he said. “Unless they stopped for some reason. Or ran off the road into a—aha! Here’s our unwelcome visitor now!”

Lance leaned down and tried to look out one of the other windows himself but only caught the aftermath of gravel dust that had been kicked up into the air by the mystery car’s tires.

“You two wait here,” Bernie said. “It’s just one of them, it looks like.”

“Who do you think—” Leah started to ask, but Bernie was already out the door, gun raised and ready, boots thudding down the porch steps.

Lance took a few steps closer to the door, hearing the sound of a rattling car engine, which idled and whined for a few seconds before it cut off completely.

Something familiar about that noise…

“Whoa, dude! What the actual fuck!” Somebody yelled.

Oh crap! Lance thought, and then he was out the door and jogging quickly down the steps and around the side of the house, where he found the beat-up Oldsmobile parked next to Leah’s Beetle and Alexa with her face flushed with anger and her hands raised in surrender. Bernie didn’t have the gun pointed at her, but instead its barrels rested casually across his forearm as he surveyed the hunk-of-junk car and clearly frustrated woman who had just arrived at his house.

When Alexa’s eyes met Lance’s and she visibly relaxed a little, Bernie said, “You know her?”

Lance nodded. “Yes, sir. She’s with us.”

“See!” Alexa said. “Can I put my hands down now?”

Bernie grunted his concession.

“I apologize, sir,” Lance said.
