Chapter Seven
Jett raised his eyes and there she stood. His dream girl. Dream no more. He wasn’t sleeping this time. At least he didn’t think so. He frowned, but no fog rose from the dance floor. And when she took his hand, her flesh was soft, if a little cool, like she’d just come from outside and it was a cold night.
They danced pressed up against each other, practically screwing on the dance floor. Unfortunately, unlike the dream, they both wore clothes. He raised his head to glance around when the song changed to something fast. But seriously, no one paid them any attention, but he noticed someone in a blue suit approaching the bar. The person caught his eye because in a place of leather and ripped dark or vibrant colors, of the latest fads, the suit stood out like a neon sign. It shouted I don’t belong here. Then he recognized her, Detective Russo.
The last he’d heard they’d never caught the two guys who jumped him. He wondered at her presence at the club. He watched the detective lean over the bar to get one of the two bartenders attention. When she did, she handed him something, a sheet of paper. He passed it to the bartender behind him. Both men shook their heads before returning the paper to the detective. Noel must have realized she didn’t have all of his attention. Suddenly her head came up and she shifted. Jett swore she stared at the detective at the bar.
Without a word Noel pulled out of his embrace and headed over in the direction of the detective. Jett frowned. Unsure what just happened, but he followed her.
The bartender said something he couldn’t hear over the loud music to Detective Russo. The woman turned around just as Noel came up beside her. Russo reached for the badge at her waist and held it up. “I’m Detective Russo. I’m looking for a Mr. Sandoval.”
“He’s not here,” Noel said.
“So the bartender informed me. And you are?” She clipped her badge onto her belt.
“His ward.”
Whoa, now that’s a funny kinda term. What the hell did that mean? Jett glanced over at the detective and noticed her gaze on him.
“Is there some place we can talk that’s less noisy?” the detective asked, glancing back and forth between them.
Without a word Noel turned and the detective trailed her, and he did the same. Noel led them down to the end of the bar then to a hallway. They came to two dark colored doors. One had a sign painted in red that said, ‘Supplies’, and the other said ‘Keep The Fuck Out.’
Noel opened the latter door. The lights in the room came on illuminating an office. One of the neatest offices he’d ever seen. For one thing, no clutter of any kind. No bookcases or file cabinets. Minimal furniture.
A desk made of some kind of smoky glass, held up by what looked like an elephant’s tusk. A solid black laptop was the only thing on the desk.
