Chapter 12
Paolo
The knock disturbed Paolo from his sleep. He sat bolt upright, in a panic, his mind frantically replaying the sequence of events after the knock during breakfast.
Warm hands rubbed his arms in a soothing gesture. Heâd recognize Tigerâs touch anywhere. Paolo breathed again, slumping against Tiger.
âItâs all right, boy. Nico sent up coffee and snacks.â
The bed creaked as Tiger got up. Paolo rubbed his eyes. How long had he been asleep? It felt like five minutes from how exhausted he felt.
âCan I come in?â
Paolo raised his head at the sound of his brotherâs voice.
âI donât think heâs ready,â Tiger said as he took the tray.
âNo, itâs okay.â Paolo scrambled out of bed to face Nico. Then he looked down at himself and flushed, realizing he was in his undershirt and shorts. âSorry, Iâve just woken up.â
Nico waved a hand as though it were unimportant, but Paolo searched around for clothes. Old Paolo wouldnât have cared who saw him undressed. He had been proud of his body. New Paolo was very conscious of how scrawny he was. The PT with Tiger helped, but he still hadnât fully recovered his muscle tone.
âHere,â Tiger said, helping him into the sweats heâd been wearing that morning. Paolo was conscious Tiger shielded him from Nico as he tugged the hoody over his head and pulled it down his body. Tigerâs hands were so gentle, and Paolo wanted to lean into him.
Nico leaned against the doorframe and now Leon had joined him. Paolo flushed again, realizing they had watched Tiger dress him as if he were a small child, but neither seemed bothered by this. Of the four men in the room, he was the only one who was disconcerted by something Tiger had been doing since the day he rescued Paolo. But then Paolo had been unable to dress himself. Now he was fine, and he still let Tiger dress him.
All this went through his head as he stared at the other men, and no one turned a hair. Was this what it could be like for him? As Tigerâs boy? He was an Acierno. He was expected to be strong. But Nico was now the head of the family and Paolo had no clue what happened behind their bedroom door. That was private.
âPaolo?â
He jumped, embarrassed to discover all eyes were on him. Tiger seemed concerned, Leon indifferent, and Nico was clearly amused. Paoloâs cheeks were going to be on fire with the amount of blushing he was doing. âIâm sorry, what did you say?â
âLetâs go into the other room,â Tiger suggested, as he placed a hand in the small of Paoloâs back and guided him out of the bedroom.
Nico and Leon settled on the couch while Paolo took the big chair. Tiger jogged back and returned with a chair from the bedroom which he placed next to Paoloâs.
âYou said you needed to talk to me,â Paolo said.
âWe need to talk to you about the kidnapper.â
âCanât it wait?â Tiger growled. âHe needs time.â
âWe havenât got time,â Nico said, his tone regretful, but firm.
