She

The way extended, featureless, ahead. Eber walked. Time was as featureless as the path he trod. It emerged from darker grayness ahead, coned into its minimal dimness and then faded behind. The surface underfoot made no sound to his tread. From time to time he paused and listened, attentive but not alert. The area in which he journeyed gave all the appearance of being completely deserted. He knew, as a general rule, quietness was not unusual in the realms of dark and yet, for that matter nor was mayhem. But a sense preyed upon his nerves that this moment was not new to him …heard “I have been here before,” as much as an uncanny sense of prescience. He felt he was striding toward an appointment.

Always at such times, Eber did not deviate. His custom was to advance upon the dark, his light extending upon his appointed direction, with the expectation that he would come up to those who most needed or were best able to use his light and the knowledge he might bring them. Long ago, he recalled, it had been manifest to him, the tracklessness of the dark ensured there was no significance in direction. Eber walked.

“I'm norteh.” The voice was soft and quiet, almost at his side.

Halting, Eber looked around him. Here the dark seemed particularly intense. No reflective planes appeared to border the way. Almost at his feet a child squatted, gazing up at him. He glanced again about him, conscious of an eeriness to his heightened awareness. This felt like a defining moment.

“Hello.” He looked down upon her crouching form, trying to gauge her true size in the murk. He had not expected to find a child.

“Norteh.” She almost whispered, her eyes fixed on his. A stillness about her that struck him.

The quiet expanded around them like ripples widening into a pool. He was conscious of the growing silence. He felt comforted by it. He felt drawn to its center and was aware of a feeling of astonishment within him at the impact of her small shape. He saw she craned up at him, where he stood and felt the need to lower himself, to bring his eyes more level with hers. He stooped and found himself comfortably on one knee, his forearm resting upon the other and his hands loosely clasped. He felt the smile upon his face, wondering within himself at what it meant and yet, perplexed to know who she might be.

From this close range, Eber examined her closely. It was disconcerting for him to see the light of his comprehension fall upon her. She was barefooted and wore just a simple gown which, even under his gaze, was only gray and bore darker folds about her body. Where she had squatted down upon her heels, the gown had ridden up around her haunches and had similarly been drawn back above her knees. His gaze fell upon her perfectly shaped features in a manner he could not withdraw. Every part of her seemed to exemplify its form.
