Chapter 16

The mere sight of the little white house in the hills seemed to be almost like a haven to Fiona after the events of the morning, and she felt relieved when Trent turned into the driveway and parked in front of the verandah. Her small red car sat off to one side, a covering of red dust across it – Fiona made a mental note to wash it tomorrow. Getting out, she stretched and pulled off the heavy leather jacket and helmet, letting the warm early afternoon air blow through her salt stiffened hair.

Getting her house keys out of her jeans pocket she walked up the front stairs, before stopping alarmed in front of the door.

“Trent!” she called out, “Check this out.”

Hearing the strain in her voice, Trent turned from where he was offloading their gear out of the bike saddlebags, “What’s wrong?”

“Something’s wrong with the front door,” she said, “There are deep scratch marks on the paint near the lock.”

Trent walked up to join her, and peered down at the deadlock.

“Yeah, that’s not normal,” he agreed, “Wait by the bike and I’ll do a check around the rest of the house and property.”

Fiona backtracked to the bike whilst Trent vanished around the side of the house, he soon returned and his face was serious.

“There’s been a break-in;” he said bleakly, “One of the back windows has been shattered. I had a quick glance inside, and there is glass all over the floor of the laundry, and the laundry door has been opened from the inside.”

Fiona’s hand flew to her mouth and she gasped with shock.

“Let me see!” she cried out, making a move to rush to the back of the house.

Trent put a hand out to restrain her, “No! What we need is to go to the police and they need to be the first inside to check for fingerprints. If we go in, we’ll just confuse things. This is a crime scene Fiona and it has to be left intact.”

Fiona nodded, seeing the sense in his words, but she still felt deeply upset at the invasion of her home.

“Come on,” he said, tossing the helmet back to her, “Let’s go to the police.”

It didn’t take long to ride there, and once the Senior Sergeant had been made aware of the situation, even less time for him to notify his younger partner of the situation, and follow them back to the house in the police car.

Fiona and Trent stood on the front verandah whilst he made his investigations. Fiona took the opportunity whilst waiting, to phone her parents, and soon enough, her mum and dad had pulled into the driveway in their Ute. Her parents, visibly upset, got out and walked over to the young couple.

“Sweetheart, are you okay?” her mum, Catherine, asked with a strained voice.

Fiona nodded and hugged her tightly.

“Anything missing, luv?” Matt asked gently.

“Not sure, Dad, we haven’t been allowed in yet,” Fiona replied in a small voice. “The policeman is still checking the place out.
