An Altered Path
Mr. Darcy stared at Elizabeth, feeling numb and enraged all at once. This young woman, whom he had loved for so many months, had ripped apart his very heart along with all of his hopes and dreams. He had offered for her, laying himself before her and speaking to all the attributes of hers which should have held him back but could not in the face of his ardent love. Yes, perhaps he had spoken poorly, or ill-worded his declaration of affection and request for her hand, but surely she was wise enough to know that he was not altogether the wordsmith especially when it came to matters that deeply affected him.
Elizabeth Bennet deeply affected him. As she stood before him, her chest rising an falling with short, sharp angry little breaths, he longed to wrap his arms around her and pull her to him. His gaze flicked to her lips, flushed with blood and passion as she had stripped him bare with just her words. Oh, Elizabeth Bennet was a sight, even infuriated, even when she had cut him down to nothing.
“So this is your answer then?” he asked again, daring it to be true, daring her to reject him again.
“Yes, yes, soundly, yes, I will not marry you,” she said, her shoulders squaring under the damp fabric of her dress. A bluster of wind hit them both and she shivered for a moment. He could see the skin rising above the neckline of her dress turning to goose flesh in the cold. How he would have warmed her, if only she had said yes to his proposal. He swallowed, wishing to hazard another go at asking her. Perhaps all was not lost. She thought him the worst of the worst, but surely, he could convince her… surely… he could…
“And if I had not interfered with your sister, with Mr. Bingley?” he hazarded, his voice choked with emotion. There was a falter in her angry mein, and a flicker of regret on her face.
“I perhaps could have… I would have forgiven, perhaps, the insight into the events with Mr. Wickham,” she finally said after several long, halting moments. His heart surged in his chest.
“You would have listened to my own share of that tale?” he asked, and he was rewarded with her ivory teeth sinking into her lush lower lip as she thought on it.
“It would be unfair of me to judge a man fully without hearing both sides of the story,” she said again, her words coming from her slowly, and her shoulders settled lower. She was calming, and he noticed she shifted towards him a half-inch, showing her hand.
She desired him! That was the only thing for it, he thought. She would not lean in just so or give him more moments of her time if she did not return in some manner the feelings that burnt inside his chest.
“Miss Elizabeth,” he murmured, and took a step towards her. She inhaled, sharply, and tilted her head to look up at him.
