CHAPTER 17

Havok

Dante had been compliant all morning, a blessing since Havok was in no mood to argue. His presentation was nigh, and it would be better for them both if Dante did not resist. Reina enjoyed some resistance, but not open defiance. Defiance would not be tolerated.

This presentation needed to go well.

If Dante angered her, she’d kill him. And whatever else happened, Havok didn’t want him dead. In truth, he didn’t want any of this. But as Scarrow had suggested, Havok could no more defy Reina than any sacha here. They were all bound by her rules and desires.

Scarrow, the fiend. He should have known he’d try to manipulate Dante, but there was nothing to be done. All things considered, the altercation could have ended far worse, had Scarrow ignored Havok’s threats.

There were others here who wanted to take from Havok, others who would try to trip Havok up, try to sabotage him, but Scarrow’s retreat would deter them. Dante was safe. For now.

Had Dante not been gagged, he’d have likely talked himself into a quick death already.

Havok glanced back at the man. Dante walked behind, eyes glazed over, his focus pinned to Havok’s back, as it should be. He’d do well to remain obedient. This would be over soon, and they’d return to his chamber and Havok would think of a way to delay the gifting for as long as he could. Perhaps he could find another Lenolian with red hair and fire in his heart.

These thoughts were foolish. Reina would know a substitute. Dante was promised to her. Havok couldn’t keep him. Although, if he asked her to relinquish her ownership temporarily, promised her he’d give her Dante when he’d been improved… Hm, yes, that idea had merit. Havok hadn’t made his own pet before, but he’d watched her create so many of them that he could easily stitch one together.

Well, whatever it took, he’d do it. He wasn’t ready to give up Dante. He wasn’t finished. Havok glanced back again, admiring the coat on Dante’s frame. The fit was perfect, better even than the lost original. And of course Dante liked it, although his opinion was irrelevant. The thin leather flowed around him, the purple marking him as owned. Since Havok had carried him from his old life, he’d changed in subtle ways. Grown less naive, more acute, but he still had a great deal of learning to undertake.

Dante’s shirt had ridden up, revealing a tiny glimpse of Havok’s butterfly. That would not do.

Havok turned and tugged Dante’s shirt down. “You must keep it hidden at all times.”

Dante’s green eyes widened. So full of questions. If Havok answered them all, they’d leave him so ruined, making him useless to Havok. “You do not need to know.”

Dante mumbled something around the gag, probably one of his infamous questions.

“Hush.”

But his eyes remained haunted. Scarrow’s invasive attention had likely left him feeling unsettled, perhaps even violated, depending on how much Scarrow had shown him. Dante had obviously been aroused, and
