Chapter Seven

Samson hadn’t gotten decent sleep like that in three months. It had been hard to drift into peaceful sleep when, at any moment, Savvy might have called him for a job or dropped by with some cronies.

Or the worst possibility, that he’d somehow discovered Samson wasn’t who he’d said he was and he was fitted with cement shoes and dropped at the bottom of the nearest body of water.

Which would have been a better way to go. While playing cards or out drinking, Samson had heard many stories about how some unfortunate people had met their end. Luckily he couldn’t get drunk off of human alcohol.

Savvy hadn’t known that and was none the wiser.

Samson had been able to throw back shots, stay sober, and yet weave his way out of dive bars like he was wasted.

In some aspects Savvy had been plumb dumb. In others, he was sharply cunning. Whenever he’d thought Samson was three sheets to the wind, Savvy would overtly interrogate him with certain questions. Samson had played right into it, continually confirming his story about how he was a no-good scoundrel and how he’d played people and the system his entire life.

Samson deserved an award for his performances. Savvy had bought everything he’d said and had looked at Samson with less and less suspicion. Samson had learned some of the inner workings of Mavis’s business. He had become more and more important in Savvy’s inner circle.

It had taken Samson three months to win the guy’s trust. He’d almost gotten the information he’d needed about who was flooding Fever’s Edge with the supply of meth and other drugs, until the incident with Sidney had happened.

The shootout in the alley? A rival drug gang. Instead of protecting Savvy and ensuring his safety, Samson had taken Sidney and fled. In Savvy’s eyes, Samson might as well have been the one shooting at him.

All the trust Samson had built had dissolved in that moment, and now he was Savvy’s number-one enemy. The guy wouldn’t stop hunting him. That wasn’t how Savvy worked. The guy knew how to hold a grudge like nobody’s business, and until Samson was dead at his feet, the guy wouldn’t rest.

Samson had seen him like that before, and it hadn’t been pretty. A small part of him had been afraid the entire time he’d been in Sunshine Grove. The anxiety he’d lived with had been crushing.

In just three months, Samson had become a changed man. Now he found it hard to sleep, always looked over his shoulder, and wondered who he could trust. That was fucked up since he lived with his pack, men who would protect him with their lives, but setting aside the anxiety wasn’t as easy as sliding off a jacket.

In time the effects of that lifestyle would fade, but he wondered if Seth felt the same way since he’d been with Samson the entire time. There had been times when Samson didn’t think he could even trust his friend. Not when he’d seen Seth whispering to Savvy’s men or going off on side trips with them.
