FOUR DAYS LATER, I stood outside the apartment rehearsing the scathing lecture I planned to give my errant husband. He might have grown up watching Sophia take his father back again and again, but there was no way I was going to emulate that unhealthy dynamic. Tony had a sixteen-month-old daughter, and he needed to start behaving like a husband and father.

As soon as I turned the key in the door, Tony came flying out of the bedroom. He looked clean-shaven, alert, and awake. We regarded each other warily.

“Didn’t expect to see you out of bed so early,” I drawled.

“I quit drinking,” he blurted out before I could say another word. “I haven’t had a drink since you left.”

I didn’t see any of the bloated, bleary-eyed messiness that I had come to expect from him in the early hours. This announcement did change the picture. Alcohol was at the root of all the problems Tony and I were going through.

“Marisa … I am so, so sorry.”

His voice quavered and his brown eyes were filled with sadness. For the first time in as long as I could remember I saw the old Tony standing before me. I had no doubt his regret was genuine. I hugged him. I wanted so desperately to believe him. I wanted us to be a real family again.
