Chapter Fourteen
It was then Emma heard it. The soft sound of feminine laughter drifting from the room next door. It was followed by a low, masculine rumble.
Andover grimaced at the sound, as though someone had hit him. He looked at her then. The fire in his dark eyes faded, cooling into a look of sheer disgust. He yanked her gown over her body, trying to cover her. Since part of the muslin was stuck under her hips, he managed to cover her belly and nothing more. He scrambled off the bed and turned his back, as though he could not abide the sight of her. He plowed a hand through his hair, smoothing the black waves she had ruffled with her restless fingers. "I must be mad."
She flinched, reality hitting with the force of a fist. Apparently madness ran rampant in this room. Sunlight flowing through the windows left no dark corners in which to hide. She lay on a bed in the most elegant brothel in London, half naked, partially seduced, and entirely foolish. Worse than foolish, because part of her could not help wishing he had ruined her. She would have preferred total ruin to this icy rejection. It was as if, having taken a look at the goods, he had decided she was not worth the bother.
Humiliation flooded her cheeks with a sharp stinging heat. She sat up and struggled with her clothes. The molten desire that had coursed through her blood pooled in her belly, cooling into a solid chunk of regret. She glared at his broad back and thought of the knife she had stolen at breakfast. Perhaps it had been a good decision to put it safely in a drawer. Because if she had had it at the moment, she might very well have plunged it into that broad back.
He shifted his shoulders, lifting them up and back as though her murderous thoughts had caused him some discomfort. "Miss Wakefield." He rubbed the back of his neck. His dark voice sounded husky when he continued. "When you are dressed, come downstairs. My coach will be waiting to take you home."
Emma sat staring at him, watching him march across the room, each step trampling her pride. He left without so much as a glance at her, as though she were nothing more than one of Orlina's girls. It occurred to her that was precisely his intent. He had wanted to teach her a lesson. When a night in Orlina's had not done the trick, he had seduced her. She could almost hear him saying, "this is what happens when a hen-witted female marches into battle with a man." She closed her eyes against the sting of tears. Yet she could not prevent the tears from leaking beneath her lashes. Never in her life had she felt more foolish. She had actually believed he had wanted her with the same reckless passion that had overwhelmed her. She had believed for one incredible moment that he might care for her.
