Chapter 19
Going South
Red wine and the comedy of Louie Vernell was the order of the night on Las Olas as we celebrated Carbone's evisceration. We were fairly convinced that the state's case had been decimated. The laughter rising from our table at the Café de Paris belied the fact that we were up to our “waistbands” in a first-degree murder trial. Certainly, the wait staff and patrons would never have imagined we'd just come from Tyson's Coliseum.
We formed our own mutual admiration society, howling over self-serving fanfare from the most unreliable of sources: Louie, our drinking buddies and me. But it was a welcome release to finally do something with all that debilitating nervous energy. The replays of the day's events we ran aloud in the bar area of the restaurant were complete with high-fives.
Louie kept feeding me ego-inflating lines I loved, like, “You had those jurors’ heads bobbing up and down with you like those little dogs on the dashboard of a ’57 Chevy!” He was telling the truth. That's why it felt so good.
“It felt better than sex,” I said, invoking another round of laughter. There's no greater feeling for a trial lawyer than when the jury is nodding along with what he's saying and doing, essentially telling him they're with him.
Everyone was echoing the mantra de jour, that Carbone had been destroyed on cross. The prosecutors had to have gone to sleep that night hoping and praying that that the old saying “It's always darkest before the dawn” would come true for them. Unfortunately for us, their prayers were answered the following morning when Louie rose to cross-examine Carbone on behalf of Bert Christie.
