In the weeks following my set at the Moonlight Lounge, a sense of genuine joy settled over the Russo house. Giovanni no longer slammed his office door shut and worked himself to the bone until one in the morning.

Instead, he met me in bed, where we fucked and consumed each other until the early morning, propelled by the excitement of burgeoning love.

Eventually, it dawned on me that I was growing feelings for him. I loved Giovanni.

Most of my waking thoughts were populated with daydreams about his eyes or abs. It seemed like every night, I launched myself into his bed, only to be taken to a new stratosphere of sexual pleasure.

Anthropologists should study what that man could do with his tongue. I’m pretty sure it would benefit humankind. No loser boyfriend would wrinkle his nose at the prospect of going down on his girlfriend once he entered the Giovanni Russo School of Cunnilingus.

Despite his gruff exterior, Giovanni was an attentive lover. But that didn’t completely dispel my suspicions about his job.

Though his office door remained unlocked, the grumblings that snuck beneath the crack in the door became increasingly ominous. Every time I walked by with a load of laundry or on my way upstairs, I could hear Giovanni hissing that someone “better take care of it or else.” He threatened limbs and livelihoods like it was nothing, causing a cold cloud of dread to form in my stomach. Angie and Chloe helped in the matter. Together, the two of them had become fully convinced that I’d fallen into some Sopranos-style trap.

Thursday morning, I woke up to a text from her. To my chagrin, she’d started a Group chat with Chloe.

Angie: Girls like you don’t survive the mob!

Chloe: I’ve done the research! She’s right!

I flipped my phone down and unplugged it from the bedside charger. Giovanni rolled over and kissed the back of my shoulders.

“What are you looking at?” he asked.

I quickly swiped away Angie’s message. “Nothing. It’s just my sister. My mom’s got yet another terrible boyfriend.” I rolled my eyes. The last part was true. Ron was now shacking up with my mom on most weekdays, much to Angie’s dismay.

“That’s too bad. You should tell your sister that she can stay over here one weekend if she needs a break,” Giovanni suggested. He got out of bed and walked over to his closet, perusing his selection of short-sleeved button-downs.

“Really? You wouldn’t mind? Obviously, she could crash in my room.”

“Yeah, it’s no problem at all. I’d love to meet her. I know how important she is to you. Plus, it’s not like you’re using your room much these days.” He winked as he buttoned a burgundy button-down and stepped into a pair of slacks.

“That would be great. I’ll go ahead and text her. Thanks, Gio.” I wrapped my arms around his neck and pulled him in for a soft early morning kiss.

When I dropped Avery off at school that morning, I noticed that she didn’t make her usual beeline to the front door to check on Ms.
