After breakfast the next morning, Neil helped the three men load their gear. None of them would be returning to camp. The chief and Sees Ahead would go north to Canada, and Cody would head down to Cheyenne, where he was to meet some bankers from the East. They had hired the ex-scout to lead them on a hunt in the Snowy Range Mountains west of Laramie. Neil suspected that not only would Cody guide their hunt, but he would also point out how wise it would be for the bankers to invest in a thrilling new kind of show that depicted the great Wild West.
âItâs been an honor to meet you, sir,â Neil said as he and Katie watched Cody saddle his horse.
âSame here, Neil.â He turned toward Katie, and his bushy eyebrows went up. âAnd you, too, Katie.â With a smile, he added, âWhoâdâve thought weâd run across a beauty like you out here on the plains of Dakota? The odds were stacked against it, thatâs for sure.â He finished with his cinch and then said, âI plan on havinâ lots of women in the show, too, if youâre interested.â
âWell, I just might be,â Katie said, returning Billâs smile. âWhat do you think Iâd be suited for?â
Neil figured the glib showman would have a clever answer to a question like that, but before he could give it, Neil said, âIâm going to say good bye to Sees Ahead and the chief while you two talk business.â
He still had no talent for telling when Katie was lying, but he suspected that was just what she was doing now. Acting in shows would never appeal to her. She got enough of that in real life. Besides, Neil figured that once they found the gold, Katie Burke would do little more than sleep until noon on satin sheets in the finest hotels around.
âSees Ahead,â Neil called out as he crossed the camp to where the Indians were watering their horses and preparing to leave. âI wanted to thank you and the chief for all your help. I figure by now Iâd be either dead or close to it if it werenât for the two of you.â
Sees Ahead smiled and nodded. The chief reached over and untied the thongs that held the buckskin and smelly poultice onto Neilâs arm. He examined the wound and then said something to the young Indian.
âChief says that he has given salve to your woman. Keep the wound salved and covered for one week, and then take buckskin off and let the air get to it.â
âAll right,â Neil said, âI sure will.â
The chief said something more, and Sees Ahead interpreted. âYou will have thick ...â He searched for the word. âI donât know what you call it,â he said. âCrust over wound.â
âScab?â Neil suggested.
âYes, scab. You will have a thick scab over the wound that will be there for a long time. When it goes away, you will have a scar that will be there forever.â
âI figured that much, but it doesnât matter.
