“That last Truth Day in 1980 was a success,” remembers Fran Sprain, many years later. “After that it just disappeared. I don’t know why. It’s a shame. It was such a special day.”

Nowadays you can buy calendars telling you that almost every day of the year has been anointed Secretary’s Day or Sweetest Day or Guacamole Day or—the granddaddy of all these terminally commercial celebrations—National Donut Day on the first Friday in June. It seems like what we really need—particularly at a time when the world is awash in distrust and lying has become an art form—is a day dedicated to truth. It was such a good idea.

If that special day were to be resurrected, says Fran Sprain, the right person to make it happen would probably be Esther Brancel of Endeavor, the new president of the Marquette County Historical Society. I call Esther and ask her if there is any interest in holding another Truth Day.

“I’ve given it absolutely no thought,” she says. “But, come to think of it, I suppose it would be something fine. And I suppose the sooner we do it, the better. I’ve always been in favor of the truth.”
