Chapter 10

Gerard

After a fun trip into Little Rapids, Riley asked Gerard if they could stop by his parents’ house to pick up some sketchbooks and pencils.

Gerard was more than happy to oblige.

In fact, Gerard was interested to see the house that Riley had grown up in. The houses on Otter Grove always looked so nice from the water while Gerard sailed past them on so many occasions, and it was an intriguing prospect to see one of them from the inside.

‘This is nice, boy,’ Gerard said, following Riley inside the house. ‘You were very lucky to grow up here.’

‘Thanks, I had a great time,’ Riley said, a wistful look in his eyes. ‘This place reminds me so much of my childhood. It was an innocent time. Part of me wishes I never left.’

‘This house, or Little Rapids in general?’ Gerard asked, sensing that Riley was feeling some real emotion in that moment. ‘Remember, everything happens for a reason. Well, that’s how I see it anyhow.’

‘I agree,’ Riley replied, walking through the entrance hall and into the kitchen. ‘At least, I think I do. Even though I had a good time at college, my favorite day of the year was always driving home for Christmas. Nothing beats home, right?’

Gerard smiled.

It was wonderful to see Riley talking about his happy childhood. But it was a stark contrast to Gerard’s upbringing with his cruel father. The best day of Gerard’s life had often felt like the day he finally decided to walk out and leave his father behind forever.

‘Oh, sorry,’ Riley said. ‘I know you didn’t have such a great time growing up. My bad.’

‘No, don’t apologize,’ Gerard said, shaking his head. ‘Never apologize for your own happiness. And like I said, everything happens for a reason. Without my unhappy childhood, would I ever have found my way to Little Rapids? Who knows.’

‘You might never have met me either!’ Riley said, immediately blushing as the words came out of his mouth.

An awkward silence hung in the air for a moment.

Gerard felt a strong urge to wrap Riley up in his arms and give him the deepest, most passionate kiss he could.

Bur Gerard resisted and instead turned his back to Riley and pretended to cast his eyes over some of Riley’s father’s paintings. The truth though was that Gerard’s mind was a million miles away from Riley’s father’s competent but unspectacular watercolors.

Now’s not the time to kiss the boy.

Me and Riley still need to talk.

I can’t rush him. It wouldn’t be right.

‘Hey, look at this,’ Riley said, bounding over toward Gerard with a sketchbook in his hand. ‘This was my last sketchbook before I left for college. I know the illustrations aren’t great, but I had so much fun doing them. It was before art became this serious thing. Before agents and galleries and New York…’

‘You think these aren’t great?’ Gerard said, genuinely taken aback by the quality of the sketches. ‘They’re fucking phenomenal. I’m not kidding. There’s so much life and humor and joy in these pictures.
