Chapter Eleven

Go for it, girl. Yvonne nearly spoke the words aloud as she stared at the sketch.

Despite the blank face, the shapes and proportions made the resemblance unmistakable. Connor had been sitting here daydreaming about her. More accurately, fantasizing about her. She’d had a few such dreams about him last night, too.

They could make them come true, right now. But…

But Mike was sleeping in the other room. Also, she’d just spent the day coming to terms with the inescapable fact that her parents needed her at home.

One more reservation: If she made tempestuous, earth-shaking love to Connor, the aftermath would break her heart.

Damn. She hated reality.

A whiff of Connor’s smooth scent nearly undid her resolve. A few steps would carry her against that strong chest. She’d pull his mouth down on hers and tantalize him until she drove out the restrained Dr. Hardison and unleashed the elemental male.

It wouldn’t take much. His jeans already stretched suggestively across his midsection. She averted her eyes, hoping he hadn’t noticed.

Apparently not. “I didn’t mean for you to see that.” Connor indicated the drawing. “I’m sorry.”

“Oh, for heaven’s sake!” Yvonne brandished the sketchpad. “Do you think this offends me? Hey, Doc, it’s flattering. My breasts aren’t nearly that big.”

“It’s not—I mean, I didn’t intend for it to be you,” he admitted.

“Now that might offend me.”

“I hope not. The fact is, my artistic impulses sometimes take me by surprise.”

Speaking of surprises, Yvonne supposed she ought to tell him that she planned to quit her job. It was, after all, why she’d come up here, hoping to catch him alone.

But she couldn’t, not with that light shining in his eyes. “I love surprises,” she murmured.

“Really?”

“Surprise me,” she added huskily.

When he drew near, her arms twined instinctively around his neck. Melting into him felt utterly natural and absolutely thrilling.

Connor responded with a gasp so deep it was almost a sob. His mouth played over hers, his tongue probing lightly, his lips demanding.

She might never again meet a man she wanted this much. Her one previous lover certainly hadn’t proved thrilling in bed.

Why not take what she wanted, even if it couldn’t last?

Yvonne was hesitating when she heard a tiny noise. Mother’s ears, that was how Lindsay referred to the sixth sense that enabled a woman to hear a child through sleep or noise or the throes of passion.

“We have an audience,” she observed.

Connor didn’t immediately get it. He’d sunk too deep in a daze, she saw as he raised his head. “Hmm?”

She ducked beneath his outstretched arm. Sure enough, Mike stood blinking outside the bedroom.

“I’m hungry,” he announced.

And that, Yvonne thought, put an end to her flirtation with insanity. Because by this evening, she had to find a way to tell this man goodbye.

LATE THAT AFTERNOON, Connor played catch with Mike in the backyard, an erratically tended patch of grasses and wildflowers rimmed by a wooden fence. The game lacked rules and, unfortunately, hygiene. Someone, Connor discovered, had taught his son to spit on the ball before pitching.
