“Hold your ground!” General Tarbus shouted to his troops. He placed himself and his handful of personal guards just behind his infantry front lines. Tarbus was a tall and powerfully built warrior, and he was armed with a two-handed falx. He was able to defend himself quite well when it became necessary.

The advancing legionnaires closed to within pilum range, then on order hurled their spears at the enemy. It is not possible to dodge or avoid a swarm of spears, and many of the Dacian soldiers fell dead or severely wounded, no longer able to fight. The legionnaires advanced again, in tight formation, their wall of shields presenting few opportunities for the Dacian infantry to attack.

The Dacian horse archers and Sarmatian cavalry now attacked the Roman flanks, picking off individual soldiers as they rode by. They were not effective in a frontal attack against the well-armored, well-trained legionnaires, but could be deadly effective attacking the flanks of legionnaire formations. The Sarmatian cavalry, fighting with the two-handed long lance, were able to attack from any angle, however even they avoided hitting Roman infantry formations head on.
