“Gwen’s room, Abby’s room,” Della murmured as they reached the hospital. But she paused and turned to Lachlan.

“We need to be discreet about what we’re doing—”

“My officers have known that,” Lachlan assured her. “So we split, two to Gwen’s and two to Abby’s?” he asked.

Della looked at Mason and let out a breath, speaking quickly. “I’m thinking one and one and that the others need to be casual, speak with the staff, find out if they’ve seen anyone new. I’m afraid that if Dante does have an accomplice at the hospital or someone who knows the workings of the hospital and has slipped in, he’ll kill someone else because he won’t want Dante killing him—or her,” she said.

“Right,” Lachlan said. “I’ll do staff, Edmund can help me.” He turned to Edmund and added, “These two already have a rapport with Gwen and Abby.”

“Fine by me,” Edmund said.

“And so we go!” Mason said. He glanced at Della and she knew that he didn’t like splitting away from her even here—even in the hospital with so many police on duty and moving about as well.

But he knew that they needed to split. And he knew that they worked because they were both careful, did have one another’s backs—and knew when they had to move.

They did. At least Gwen and Abby weren’t on different floors. When they reached the floor, Mason said, “Gwen.”

“Gwen. Good, you get the vindictive dad and I get Abby’s parents, who are lovely!” she said.

“Oh, wait!” he teased.

“You called it!”

He made a face at her and went in his direction. She hurried on to Abby’s room. Two officers were in the hall and greeted her and she asked about the care that Abby had received that morning—if anything unusual had happened and if they knew or had seen the hospital personnel with her before.

Abby had been seen by the doctor who had been with her the day before, and the only nurse who had been in had been the same nurse she’d had the day before as well.

“I believe they’re planning on discharging her this afternoon,” one officer told her. “The doctor wanted to assure himself that her system was cleaned out and check with Mackenzie to see if it was all right for her to leave with her parents.”

Della thanked them and hurried on in.

Abby was sitting up and smiling. Her parents were in chairs on either side of the bed. They rose to greet Della, asking anxiously, “Anything?”

Della smiled. “We keep following leads. I’m afraid we don’t have him yet.”

“But you’re here for something,” Marlene Holt said, glancing at her husband.

“Maybe, maybe not,” she said cheerfully, but she paused and shrugged. “I understand you might be leaving later today or this evening.”

“Home to Glasgow,” Marlene Holt said. “If the police think it’s safe!”

“It will be safe,” Joshua Holt said firmly. “I have friends with a private security firm. We’ll hire our own since... Not to be offensive, but since the police seem incapable of catching one man, well, I shall be taking things into me own hands!”

Della managed another smile.
