CHAPTER TWELVE

MYA

“What would you like to have for dinner?” Nico’s boyish grin almost disarmed me all over again.

If I weren't so satiated from the lovemaking we'd risen from not thirty minutes back, I'd be all over him once more.

I looked around at the modular kitchen, beautified with creamy white cabinetry, matte pastel pendant lights, and unmistakably elegant marble counters.

It was a curious mix of cottage core and sophistication, like an interlude written upon pristine ivory tiles and oiled bronze hardware contributing to an aged, warm appearance.

This was the kind of kitchen that made you want to go foraging and bring fresh herbs and treasures back home. Unlacquered copper pots added to the rustic charm, bordered by soapstone counters and a long oak central table.

All in all, it brought a very lived-in atmosphere that made me feel right at home. There was something about this space. It just spoke out to me.

"Hey." Nico interrupted my gentle reverie. "Were you at the bookstore earlier?"

"The one with the cute old lady? Yes! Rowan told me all about the first editions there, and I really wanted to find one. I got a Folio Society edition of Rebecca a few months back, but my heart is set on the first edition copy. Call me ambitious, why don't you?"

"Hah." He sounded bemused and delighted. "You have no idea how happy that makes me! I'm a huge collector myself, and a book dragon a thousand times over."

"A book dragon?" I laughed.

"Why should we be worms when we're always hunting for adventures?"

I could see what Wynn meant when he said Nico was the most sensible of the entire lot. "Well, from one book dragon to another, if you ever want to go hunting for old copies in forgotten bookstores across vintage alleys, I'm game."

"It's a deal." He smiled. "I was thinking, about dinner—"

"Wait," I replied, checking the time. "Nico, would you be okay here on your own if I went exploring the city by myself for a bit?"

This was a test. Even I didn't realize it, but oh, if he insisted on tagging along, it would mean he, albeit unconsciously, would stifle me somewhere down the line.

The world seemed to close in on me as I waited for his response.

"Absolutely!" He beamed. "Are you sure you'll be okay on your own?"

I breathed a huge sigh of palpable relief. "I will. Thank you for trusting me by myself."

He reached out and caressed my cheek. "Mya, you have to know, this thing we have going, it's unconventional for all of us. But we trust you completely."

My eyes misted, for no one, not even Ro, considered me capable of mature decisions.

"And part of this trust," he continued, fastening the buttons of his shirt, "is in knowing you can take care of yourself."

I nodded.

"You have my number. Just call if you need anything."

New Orleans had to be one of the liveliest cities I'd ever set foot in. I took an Uber down to the Garden District, piled high with stately lawns and towering homes.
