CHAPTER 10
Damn female, Grondar grumbled to himself as he cleaned up the mess from the tray heâd dropped. Fortunately the sturdy china hadnât broken and neither had Granâs tray. Even though heâd thought it a ridiculous present, he appreciated the artistry of the designâeven more now that heâd used it to serve his female his food in his bed.
Fuck. Not his female. But his denial couldnât completely eliminate his pleasure at feeding herâat caring for her. And now she wanted him to bathe her? He had imagined her flushed and glowing in a tub once before, but the thought of her in his tub was even more pleasurable. What was he going to do? He cleaned up as slowly as possible before finally returning to his bedroom, as nervous as he had once been on the first day of school.
She looked up when he finally returned to the bedroom and smiled as if she were delighted to see him. His chest suddenly ached, and he frowned at her.
âIâll call Gran and ask her to help you,â he said quickly.
âIâm sure she would have been happy to help meâbefore you threw her out of her house.â
He had an uneasy suspicion she was right. It would be just like his grandmother to ignore his calls, and no doubt Gladys would behave the same way.
âI could call Ermengarde,â he offered almost desperately.
âThe pixie with the pink hair? She seems very nice, but I donât know anything about her other than that she likes Speckled Owls.â
âYou donât know me either,â he burst out.
Her teasing expression softened.
âYes, I do, Grondar. And I trust you.â
Fuck. How could he resist, especially when she seemed so sincere. Human females are never sincere, he reminded himself as he stomped off to the bathroom to run water into the tub, but the familiar caution rang hollow. Despite his initial accusation that she was trying to sabotage him, everything about her seemed genuine. He sighed, then threw a couple of vanilla beans into the tub, letting the familiar scent perfume the air as he lit the row of candles on the ledge above the tub.
After making sure the water wasnât too hot, he returned to carry her into the bathroom. He lifted her into his arms, trying to ignore the fact that she felt just as right in his arms now as she had when he brought her home. As he carried her into the bathroom, she gave a delighted gasp.
âI knew you had a wonderful bathroom. This is gorgeous.â
He couldnât help smiling at her approval. The same wood elf who had built his bed had also carved the posts that framed all the bathroom fixtures. The tub was set in a bay window with more carved trees forming an arched opening in front of it. The soft shades of blue and green in the stained-glass window sparkled in the candlelight.
âAnd candles too?â Her body suddenly stiffened. âDo you have a girlfriend, Grondar?â
âNo,â he said gruffly, his own body tensing. âThis is just how I like to relax.
