Chapter Eleven
âSO YOU PAID THE city a visit.â Uncle Walter had become only a little less white than his Sunday shirt. âHow was it?â
âNo good,â I said.
âDid you go to the Flats?â
âYes.â
âSee any old friends?â
âI saw a girl I used to know.â
âSee the one you went to see?â
âI suppose so. Yes.â
âI hope you done all right,â Uncle Walter said. âIf you went that far, I hope you made out.â
âI donât know,â I said. âI didnât sleep with her. Thatâs what I went to the city for, youâre right about that.â
âIt sounds confused to me,â Uncle Walter said.
âI think maybe what I got was better.â
âIf you think what you got was better, I think you really are confused,â said Uncle Walter. âBut itâs your world and youâre living in it.â
âIâm satisfied.â
âA bird in the hand, you know,â Uncle Walter said. âBut O.K.â
âI doubt Iâll be going back,â I said.
Uncle Walterâs voice lost a bit of its naturalness and he said, âYou hear anything of that Pedro Tamus?â
âPedro Tamus?â I said. âWhy, heck, no. Why should I?â
âKid, this guy Pedro Tamus would have been to all your friends trying to find out if any of them had heard from you,â Uncle Walter said.
âWell, I thought of that. I kept my mouth shut.â
âDid you tell anybody where weâre living?â
âNo.â
âCould they have followed you here?â
âI donât think so, Uncle Walter. I donât know. If they were lucky, they might pick up my trail. Who can be sure?â
âGod bless us. I hope they donât,â Uncle Walter said grimly.
âUncle Walter, why does this guy want you so badly?â
âItâs not me he wants. Itâs you.â Uncle Walter said. He had let that slip. He hadnât intended to say that.
âMe!â I blurted.
He winced and sank down on the bed. âMy flapping tongue! No, thatâs wrong, Johnny.â He half turned and struck the bedclothes a terrific blow with his fist. âYou get me upset, goddamn it, and I say something I donât intend to say!â
âUncle Walter, youâve got to stop holding out on me. You know that, donât you? Someday youâve got to tell me whatâs going on.â
âNothing is going on.â
âThat Pedro Tamus has been chasing you for years. The hell nothing is going on! Iâm a big boy now. Letâs have it!â
âYou shut up!â Uncle Walter jumped to his feet, shoved his face close to mine, and yelled, âYour old man, that no-good bastard, is the one responsible for this! Iâm damned if Iâm going to let you get mixed up in it. So you shut up and stop asking questions!â
It was here I think that the greatest change in my feelings about Uncle Walter occurred and it was one of the great changes of my life. Uncle Walter was a bullheaded and lecherous man and no asset to my environment and I was angry with him for refusing to tell me what was giving us all this trouble. But now, looking at him, hearing him refuse to talk, I had something new and good added to my existence.
