At Kristine’s Apartment

Kristine Trautmann’s day had been long. With worry eating away at her concentration, she’d been hard-pressed to keep her mind on her work. She’d loaded the wrong film into her Leica and had shot an entire sequence of candid shots before she realized the error. She was changing film and cursing her mental lapse when word of August Becker’s death swept through the department. Curious, she walked to where a small crowd was gathering and caught a glimpse of the body on the floor. Her journalistic instincts taking over, she pushed her way through and snapped a few photos—a couple of head shots and a full length of the body. The man who appeared to be in control of the situation stepped aside for her. Nobody questioned her presence. It was one of the benefits of the job. These shots wouldn’t go into the conference brochure, but a good photographer never misses an opportunity. A serendipitous occurrence might prove beneficial in the future. As a bonus, it got her mind off Dieter, if only for a little while. The body was face down on the floor of the botany laboratory, close to the door. The right arm was outstretched, as if it had been reaching for the door handle, when death intervened. It was the face that captured her attention, though. It had, without a doubt, the most horrible expression she had ever seen. She took a closeup.

Finally, the day wound to a close, and Kristine packed up her equipment. Ilsa would already be at the house. Hopefully, she had found the nurse and gotten some help for them. After two quick stops, first at the butcher shop, where she’d bought a chicken, and then the produce market, where she’d selected some fruit and reasonably fresh vegetables from the scant offerings, she pulled up to the curb and parked behind Ilsa’s automobile. Kristine gave a sigh of relief. If Ilsa were already here, it must mean she had been successful. Gathering her bags, she went up the front walk, giving two quick raps, a pause, and then one more rap at the door to alert Ilsa she had arrived. She opened the door and set her handbag, groceries, and camera bag on the floor and went to the bedroom where Ilsa was setting up a first aid station for Dieter.

“How is he?” Kristine wriggled out of her jacket and tossed it on the chair. Ilsa had removed the old bandage and was studying a sheet of instructions.

“Schatz, I don’t know. He seems to be the same as last night. Gudrun gave me some antiseptic, some saline solution, and some syringes to help in cleaning the wound. Keeping it clean and the bandage clean is the most we can do. She wasn’t optimistic, but she can’t do anything more for us. She wished us luck. She didn’t ask for any details, and I didn’t give her any. Just told her somebody I knew had a wound that might become infected and it could be serious.
