PIPER WAS WASHING down the painted walls in the living room when her phone rang. She studied the number before answering, but didn't recognize it.

“Hello?”

“Piper? It's Donte.”

At least Lex wasn't stalking her from an unknown number. Piper put down her cloth. “Hi Donte, what can I do for you.”

“Just seeing if you're home. David would like to drop by this afternoon and talk about selling the house, if that would work for you?”

“David your boss?”

“That's the one,” Donte said. From the background noise he was obviously driving. “I'd come myself, but he's sent me to look at a property a couple of villages over and I won't make it back in time. Besides, I think he wants to put a face to the name and meet you himself.”

“Sure,” Piper said, knowing that she should be happier about this. She did want to sell the house after all.

“Great,” said Donte. “He'll be with you around three.”

“Perfect.” Piper hung up.

“Everything okay?” Cam asked, sticking her head around the door.

“Yes, absolutely,” said Piper, tucking her hair behind her ear. She should say something, but she didn't. The phone call sat in her stomach heavy.

“Great, listen, I've got to get some shopping done. I need some stuff for the bathroom and I promised dad I'd pick up a tool he's rented and that he needs this afternoon. It'll take me most of the afternoon, I'm afraid. Fancy coming and keeping me company?”

Those eyes, the way they shifted from chocolate to hazel and back again. Piper was in half a mind to take Cam right there and then. She took a breath and shook her head. “I can't.” The truth, she had to tell the truth. “David Chancellor is dropping by. It's probably nothing, he probably just wants to talk about prices and things, nothing important.”

But Cam's face dropped slightly anyway. “Right, sure. Well, I'll be off then.”

She was turning away and Piper hated to see her go. “Will I see you later?”

Cam turned back, face brightening again. “You want to?”

“You don't?”

“I'll think about it. I mean, if you happen to be in The Duck and Pony at around seven then I suppose there won't be any avoiding you.”

Piper laughed. “It's a date.”
